Sibelius user John Glossenger got in touch with me to share his tips for using third party VST and Audio Units virtual instruments with Sibelius. He says:
Before I moved to Sibelius (from SONAR), I created about 2,000 presets for my various VSTs, such as Absynth, Pro53 and FM8. I ran into some problems while trying to use those VST presets in Sibelius. I wanted to use my VSTs quickly, without doing the official procedure, such as creating sound sets.
So I fumbled my way through the process, and learned a few things, and I thought I’d share my insights with the Sibelius community.
If you're trying to use Kontakt Player as a VST or AU plugin within the Finale or Sibelius notation programs, but you're not seeing Kontakt as an available option, it probably means the plugin wasn't properly placed into the exact location Finale or Sibelius looks for it. Fortunately, there is a remedy for this. /max-vst-plugins.html.

Solution: Locate the Kontakt VST file. When you installed Kontakt, this file should have been installed at C>Program Files>Native Instruments>VSTPlugins. The file will be named for your version of Kontakt (i.e., Kontakt5.dll if you installed Kontakt version 5). Then copy this .dll file and paste it into the folder where your notation program is trying to locate it. See below for the correct folders.

Note about 64-bit plugin: Be sure to copy from the NI VST folder that corresponds to your 32-bit or 64-bit system. In order to use the 64-bit version of the plugin, you need to be running the 64-bit version of Windows, and your notation program must be 64-bit compatible. The newest versions of Finale and Sibelius are both 64-bit compatible. If you're unsure of any of this, we recommend you use the 32-bit version.
If you're experiencing this problem with a version of Finale prior to v25, and are using Kontakt 5.6.8 (or greater) after Spring 2017, read the note below about 32-bit/64-bit support.

*If you don't see the VSTPlugins folder, go ahead and create it manually in that location.

Once you've placed that file in the corresponding folder, restart Finale or Sibelius and you should now see Kontakt listed as an available VST device.

MACINTOSH USERS:
If you aren't seeing Kontakt as an available AU (Audio Unit) plugin, simply re-run the Kontakt installer, ensuring that you don't deselect any options from the screens preceding the installation. As long as you run the default options of the installer, the AU version of Kontakt will be automatically installed to the correct location and it will show up in all your audio/midi programs that support Audio Units.
If you're experiencing this problem with a version of Finale prior to v25, and are using Kontakt 5.6.8 (or greater) after Spring 2017, read the note below about 32-bit/64-bit support.

SPECIAL NOTE TO FINALE USERS REGARDING 32-bit AND 64-bit SUPPORT:

If you're using Kontakt 5.6.8 or later with a version of Finale prior to Finale v25, you may be experiencing an incompatibility with 32-bit or 64-bit compatibility. Finale has not supported 64-bit functionality until v25. Kontakt 5.6.8+ only comes in a 64-bit format. So if you're trying to access Kontakt 5.6.8+ within a version of Finale prior to v25, the plugin will not show up. Your solution would be to either A) upgrade to the latest version of Finale or B), downgrade your Kontakt Player to an earlier version that supports the older 32-bit format.
